Shii holds talks with Vietnamese ambassador on Ukraine-Russia issue

March 17, 2022
Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo on March 16 held talks with Vietnamese Ambassador to Japan Vu Hong Nam at the JCP head Office in Tokyo and exchanged views over the handling of the issue between Ukraine and Russia.

Shii explained the JCP's stance which has been demanding an immediate and unconditional end to the Russian military action in Ukraine. He pointed out that the Russian action is violating Article 2, Clause 4 of the UN Charter and undermines the international order based on this charter; the nuclear threats Russia is making go against Article 1 of the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons; and Russia's bombing of a nuclear power plant and a hospital in Ukraine infringed upon international laws of war as well as upon additional protocols to the Geneva Conventions.

Ambassador Nam explained that Vietnam is working to persuade both Russia and Ukraine to immediately stop military action. Citing that the UN Charter obliges all State Parties to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of other countries, the ambassador stated that the use of force is unpardonable in all cases and a peaceful resolution of the issue is necessary.

Shii said, "The latest developments are an issue that threatens the very foundation of the world peace order in the 21st century. I hope the JCP and the Communist Party of Vietnam will cooperate in working to help resolve this problem based on the UN Charter and international law." Ambassador Nam in response said that he will convey Shii's comments to the CPV leadership.
