Diet session must not be extended for passage of postal-related bills: Shii

June 6, 2010
Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo on June 5 expressed opposition to the new cabinet’s move to extend the Diet session in order to get the bill to revise the postal privatization policy enacted.

“The bill must be scrapped in the on-going session of the Diet and then fundamentally reexamined,” said Shii, pointing out that it does not guarantee universal service in postal savings and postal insurance systems. He also criticized the ruling coalition for forcibly passing the bill through the Lower House after allowing only six hours for deliberation.

Concerning the “money-buys-politics” scandal involving Ozawa Ichrio who recently resigned as the secretary general of the ruling Democratic Party of Japan, Shii said that even the Liberal Democratic Party conducted the summoning of sworn witness to the Diet when it came to such a major corruption scandal. “If Prime Minister Kan is calling for a ‘clean politics,’ he should have Mr. Ozawa provide sworn testimony in the Diet,” Shii stressed.
