JCP urges government to provide details of 1.24-billion-yen actual costs for ex-PM Abe’s state funeral

October 15, 2022

The Prime Minister Kishida-led government on October 14 at directors’ meetings of the budget committees in both Houses in the Diet reported that the total cost for former Prime Minister Abe’s state funeral came to 1.24 billion yen, 420 million yen less than the initial budget of 1.66 billion yen.

According to the government, of the 1.24 billion yen, 240 million yen was spent for the funeral venue, 480 million yen for security, and 510 million yen for overseas guests.

The government explained that as the number of overseas guests was smaller and their stays shorter than expected, the actual expenditure was below the government’s original estimate. In addition, the government said that the costs of accommodation for police officers and for their overtime were lower than the initial estimate.

The government expected that a total of 6,000 people from inside and outside Japan would attend the state funeral. However, the number of participants stood at 4,170 including 734 foreign guests.

At a Lower House meeting of Budget Committee directors, Japanese Communist Party representative Miyamoto Toru urged the government to provide detailed information which includes data showing the number of invitees and attendees according to categories such as the bereaved persons. In reply, a government official expressed his/her intent to respond to the JCP lawmaker’s request as soon as possible.
