2025 March 12 - 18 [PEACE]

50 years since establishment of nuclear-free Kobe Port Formula

March 17, 2025
A rally to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the “Non-Nuclear Kobe Port Formula” took place on March 16 in Kobe City (Hyogo Pref.).

The Kobe Formula, based on a resolution passed by the Kobe City Assembly on March 18, 1975, prohibits nuclear-capable vessels that do not submit a certificate that they are not carrying nuclear weapons from entering Kobe Port. Since its establishment, not a single U.S. warship has entered the port.

Kajimoto Shushi, secretary general of the Hyogo Prefectural Council against A and H Bombs (Hyogo Gensuikyo) said, “The Kobe Formula is of great significance today as the Japanese government is attempting to turn Japan into a country capable of engaging in war.”

Kawada Tadaaki of the Japanese Communist Party pointed out that the Kobe Formula can play an important role in building a non-nuclear peace zone in East Asia.

Lee Jun-Kyu, peace activist from South Korea, spoke about the situation on the Korean Peninsula and the peace-building outlook in East Asia.

Roland Nivet of the French Peace Movement sent a message in solidarity to the rally.
