Japanese Communist Party organizations and members throughout the country have taken to the streets to hold fund-raising campaigns to encourage and assist the disaster victims in the wake of the devastating earthquake and tsunami that occurred on March 11.
In Kobe City of Hyogo Prefecture, on March 13 in front of JR Rokkomichi Station, JCP candidates running in local elections and members of the Democratic Youth League of Japan took part in a fund drive. Holding donation boxes with the March 12 Akahata front page photo of the Great East Japan Disaster, participants asked the public for donations by saying, “From Kobe, hit by the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake 16 years ago, let’s offer help to the March 11 disaster victims!”
The JCP Fukui Prefectural Committee on March 12 carried out fund-raising campaigns on the streets in Fukui City.
JCP members called on passersby for their cooperation. Using the microphone, Fukui gubernatorial candidate Uno Kunihiro and JCP local assembly election candidates declared, “We urge the national government to make the utmost effort to rescue missing people and to give aid to the disaster victims, and at the same time we are launching this fund drive.”
In the Setagaya Ward of Tokyo, JCP Setagaya Ward Assembly member Sakurai Minoru and JCP Setagaya Branch members on March 13 collected 140,000 yen in a one-hour fund-raising street campaign at Setagaya’s famous shopping district Sangenjaya.
In other prefectures such as Hokkaido, Yamagata, Yamanashi, and Kochi, JCP members held campaigns to collect donations for the victims.
