2011 June 15 - 21 [GREAT EAST JAPAN DISASTER]

JCP sends 6,000 volunteers to disaster-hit areas

June 21, 2011
Japanese Communist Party Secretariat Head Ichida Tadayoshi on June 20 at a press conference in the Diet building stated that 6,000 people have taken part in volunteer activities organized by the JCP in the disaster-hit areas during the more than three months since the Great East Japan Disaster.

According to Ichida, volunteers have done various jobs including delivering relief supplies to meet victims’ needs, clearing rubble, and removing mud. Some of them, such as nurses or lawyers, have contributed to the work, using their professional skills.

Ichida also announced that the JCP Central Committee collected more than 670 million yen in relief donations and that it delivered the money to 82 municipalities and 68 agricultural and fishery cooperative associations.

Looking back on the JCP’s reconstruction and relief activities as a whole, Ichida pointed out that local JCP organizations in the disaster-hit areas have worked hard to conduct relief activities and that the JCP created a system for long-term support, allocating each JCP prefectural committee specific areas of responsibility.

In addition, Ichida mentioned that JCP Chair Shii Kazuo and other lawmakers carried out several on-site studies in the stricken region and put together the findings in two proposals for recovery assistance, and then took up the issue in Diet debates and requested the authorities or other related organizations to support the proposals.
