Local people protest against transfer of US forces flight training to Mageshima Island

In protest against the Japanese and U.S. governments’ designation of Mageshima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture as a possible site for transfer of field carrier landing practice (FCLP) by U.S. military aircraft, local authorities made representations to the Defense Ministry on June 29.
They are members of a local association opposing the relocation plan, formed by residents and municipalities of one city and three towns in Kagoshima.
The statement they submitted to a ministry official reads, “The association has repeatedly visited the Defense Ministry and expressed its strong opposition to the transfer of U.S. military facilities and FCLP” to Mageshima Island.
“The latest joint document compiled by the Japanese and U.S. governments in disregard of local opposition is very regrettable and cannot be tolerated,” the statement declared.
On the same day, the Kagoshima Prefectural Assembly approved a unanimous resolution against the relocation of the U.S. military training exercises to the island.
