Japan returns cultural assets to South Korea

Japanese Prime Minister Noda Yoshihiko at the summit meeting with South Korean President Lee Myong-bak held on October 19 in Seoul returned part of the cultural assets taken from Korea during Japan’s colonial rule.

The Japanese Communist Party for more than four years has worked for the return of Korean cultural assets together with Korean civic organizations and parliamentarians, and taken up the matter in the Diet.

JCP member of the House of Representatives Kasai Akira said, “The returned Korean royal protocol is a documentary heritage and an important cultural asset which is deeply linked with the national identity of South Korea and its people. The JCP will work hard to achieve the return of other Korean cultural assets in accordance with the principle of the UNESCO convention which states that cultural property should be handed back to its country of origin.
