10,000 disabled persons call for a needs-based law

About 10,000 disabled persons gathered at Tokyo’s Hibiya Amphitheater on October 28, calling for a new law, the Comprehensive Welfare Act for Persons with Disabilities, to reflect their demands. They marched through the streets of the Ginza after the gathering.

Those with disabilities have long sought for equality with others and more improved measures for all kinds of disabilities.

As a new law is in the making, they are requesting that the government incorporate in the law such items as a support system placing maximum value on each person’s own needs and charge-free support services necessary in accordance with the extent of disability.

Japan Disability Forum (JDF) President Ogawa Eiichi said, “Let’s join hands in pressing ahead with a new law to reflect our demands!”

Japanese Communist Party representatives Takahashi Chizuko (Lower House) and Tamura Tomoko (Upper House) also participated in the gathering along with other party lawmakers.

Takahashi declared the JCP resolve, saying, “We will work in cooperation with you to have your demands met.”
