Japanese Communist Party member Shimada Masayoshi on December 4 won the mayoral election of Fukusaki Town, Hyogo Prefecture, for his fifth consecutive term.
Shimada, supported by the “Association to Build a Bright Fukusaki Town,” received 56.41% of votes cast, defeating his rival Matsuoka Shigetoshi by a large margin.
During his election campaign, Shimada stressed his achievements during the last four terms, including initiating the investigation into charges of false accounting by a joint public-private venture producing locally-grown wheat products and the promotion of maintenance and repair of the public sewerage system.
He pledged to further develop welfare, child-rearing, and medical services as well as to promote natural disaster-resistant capabilities and residents’ participation in municipal management.
There are 10 Japanese Communist Party municipal heads in Japan. In Hyogo Prefecture on October 30, Kudo Takashi achieved victory in the Kamigori Town mayoral election.
