Namie Town Assembly wants all reactors in Fukushima shut down

The Namie Town Assembly in Fukushima Prefecture on December 21 adopted a resolution by majority vote, calling on the central government and TEPCO to decommission all nuclear reactors in Fukushima.

The assembly also passed a retraction of its 1967 resolution seeking another nuclear plant to be built in the town.

The latest resolution criticizes the government for announcing that the Fukushima crisis is now under control despite the totally-unknown conditions inside the damaged reactors.

The resolution states that about 170,000 Fukushima citizens, including 21,000 Namie townspeople, are still forced to live in temporary shelters throughout Japan, having to worry about their possible health damage and without knowing when they can go back to their homes.

The resolution calls for a sustainable, viable society and the creation of communities not dependent on nuclear energy.

The Fukushima Prefectural Assembly on October 20 also adopted a petition calling for the decommissioning of all nuclear reactors in Fukushima.
