11 million live within 50km of nuclear power plants

March 30, 2012
In Japan, 11 million people are living within a 50 km radius of nuclear power plants, the radius in which the government is considering imposing stronger measures against nuclear accidents.

This was learned in documents that the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency released in response to the request made by Yoshii Hidekatsu, House of Representatives member of the Japanese Communist Party.

The Hamaoka nuclear power plant in Omaezaki City, Shizuoka Prefecture, has the largest number of residents within 50 km, 2.14 million people, followed by 1.49 million people near the Tokai Daini NPP (Tokai Village, Ibaraki Pref.) and 1.4 million near the Genkai NPP (Genkai Town, Saga Pref.).

The move to restart the Kansai Electric Power Co.’s Oi NPP (Oi Town, Fukui Pref.) has accelerated. There are 450,000 residents living within a 50 km radius of the plant.
