2012 October 10 - 16 [NUCLEAR CRISIS]

88% of Fukushima municipalities want Fukushima without N-reactors

October 16, 2012
Among Fukushima’s 59 local governments, 88% or 52 of them adopted a statement or a resolution demanding that all 10 nuclear reactors within the prefecture be decommissioned.

Since the prefectural assembly adopted in September last year a petition calling for the decommissioning of all the nuclear reactors, the move has spread to local assemblies within the prefecture.

Only 7 towns and villages in Fukushima’s Futaba District, where nuclear power plants are located, have yet to call for the shut-down of the nuclear reactors. A local assembly of Katsurao Village, one of the seven municipalities, decided to discuss the issue in the assembly session in December.

The 10 nuclear reactors are the 6 units at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant and 4 at the Fukushima Daini Nuclear Power Plant. Of them, 4 units at the Fukushima Daiichi NPP are already slated for decommissioning. Both plants are operated by Tokyo Electric Power Company.
