|
The New Japan Women’s Association (Shinfujin, president, Takada Kimiko) called on five countries participating in the Group of Eight (G8) Summit in Hokkaido from July 7-9 to make efforts to make the Earth sustainable.
Shinfujin representatives took its proposal to the embassies of five countries -- Canada, Germany, the United States, Britain, and France – between June 10 and 26.
The “Japanese Women’s Proposal for Sustainable Earth” consists of the following five points: (1) abolition of nuclear weapons, (2) reversing of global warming, (3) defense of food sovereignty, (4) regulations to control speculative money, and (5) cuts in military spending to free up more money to reduce poverty.
All five embassies promised to convey the request to their respective governments.
A German embassy official commented that the proposal agrees with the German policy.
A French embassy official stated that it is interested in the 5-point proposal and that the EU is aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent by 2020.
Britain stated that the Shinfujin’s call for a mid-term goal for reduction is very important.
