Tokyo turns down parents’ call for more authorized childcare centers

March 29, 2013
The Liberal Democratic, Democratic, Komei, Restoration, and Your parties on March 28 at the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly plenary turned down a petition calling for an increase in subsidies to municipalities for more childcare facilities with national standards.

The Japanese Communist Party and the Seikatsusha Net supported the petition.

The petition was submitted with 120,000 signatures by a civil group to improve childcare and welfare services in Tokyo.

JCP assembly member Oyama Tomoko on March 19 at a welfare committee meeting pointed out that 23,600 children are on waiting lists for childcare services and that Governor Inose Naoki at a meeting of the special committee on the budget indicated that he will “build more authorized childcare centers in order to decrease the number of children on waiting lists for such facilities without delay.”

She emphasized the need to provide further financial support to Tokyo’s local governments for more licensed nurseries that meet national standards.
