Don’t abandon nuclear power because of Fukushima tragedy: LDP Hosoda
|
Liberal Democratic Party Executive Acting Secretary-General Hosoda Hiroyuki on July 22 said on a satellite TV program, “If we abandon nuclear power because of the Fukushima tragedy, it will cause an intolerable pain to future generations.”
Hosoda is a member of the House of Representatives elected from Shimane Prefecture which hosts Chugoku Electric Power Company’s Shimane nuclear power plant. He also serves as a head of an LDP parliamentarians’ group seeking the early restart of idled nuclear reactors.
The LDP executive on the TV program said, “The world is now calling for promotion of nuclear power generation,” and stressed that reducing the number of reactors is going against the international trend. Giving up nuclear power generation only because of the Fukushima tragedy will cause “an intolerable pain” to future Japanese, he argued.
Nemoto Satoshi of the Fukushima Federation of Farmers’ Movement commented on Hosoda’s remark as follows:
What does the LDP think about people who are still undergoing “an intolerable pain”?
I feel like we have been abandoned.
Farmers in Fukushima are distressed as they do not know how long they have to endure the hardship of having no prospects for the future.
What the national government should do is to strengthen measures against another massive earthquake, decommission reactors at the Fukushima plant with the help of the collective wisdom of people around the world, give its best effort to reconstruction work of Fukushima, and promote energy sources that don’t threaten people’s lives.
