Ex-US sailor arrested for drug smuggling

Kanagawa Police on July 24 arrested a former U.S. serviceman assigned to the U.S. Yokosuka Naval Base for drug smuggling.

The U.S. authorities handed over the suspect to Japan, the first time this has happened since the bilateral criminal extradition treaty came into force in 1980.

Police said that the former U.S. sailor engaged in trafficking in the synthetic narcotic MDMA into Japan through the military postal system.
