Okinawa Prefectural Assembly Committee unanimously adopts draft resolution protesting against government textbook screening policy
|
The Okinawa Prefectural Assembly education and welfare committee on June 19 unanimously adopted a draft resolution that calls on the government to retract the Education Ministry textbook screening policy of deleting an account that the Japanese Imperial Army had forced Okinawans into committing “mass suicide” during the Battle of Okinawa in June 1945.
All assembly members’ groups, including the Liberal Democratic, Komei, Japanese Communist, and Social Mass parties, supported the draft resolution.
Maeda Masaaki, a JCP assembly member assigned to the committee, said, “The draft resolution was unanimously passed amid the indignation of the residents over the textbook screening policy. I am very glad that the Prefectural Assembly has fulfilled its responsibility towards the residents.”
Separately, the Tarama Town Assembly in Okinawa on June 19 unanimously adopted a similar resolution and sent it to the prime minister and the education minister. - Akahata, June 20, 2007
