Union urges JAL to offer full-time position to CA

Following All Nippon Airways’ announcement of a plan to offer full-time positions to all its cabin attendants, the Japan Airlines Cabin Crew Union on September 3 issued a statement demanding that JAL do the same.

Japan’s major airlines, ANA and JAL, maintained a system under which all new CAs are employed on one-year contracts and will be given full-time positions after three years of service. However, on August 19, ANA announced that it will start hiring all new CAs as regular employees.

The CCU in the statement said that if JAL seeks to be one of the top airlines in the world, the company should employ CAs as full-time workers. JAL should revise its employment practices and adopt a human resource development strategy utilizing a long-term perspective, the statement added.

CCU Chair Furukawa Asako at a press conference held in Tokyo on the same day pointed out that a CA is a highly specialized job requiring much experience and good teamwork. She went on to say, “More than 80% of JAL CAs are working under one-year contracts. We strongly demand that the company offer them regular positions as ANA decided to do.”
