Minato Ward calls for removal of US heliport

In the wake of a recent crash-landing of a U.S. military helicopter in Kanagawa Prefecture, Tokyo’s Minato Ward on December 17 sent a written request to the U.S. and Japanese governments calling for the removal of a U.S. heliport from the ward.

The request, signed by Mayor Takei Masaaki and Ward Assembly Chair Izutsu Nobuhiro, points out that the U.S. Azabu heliport at the Akasaka Press Center which is located in the middle of the city has caused noise pollution and aroused fears of possible crashes among residents.

It demands that the U.S. and Japanese governments thoroughly investigate the cause of the accident in Kanagawa, take measures to prevent a recurrence, and remove the military facility from the city.
