JCP resolves to win major victory in general election
|
The Japanese Communist Party on November 25 held a meeting at its head office in Tokyo, resolving to achieve a major victory in the upcoming general election. About 20,000 JCP members and supporters across the country viewed the meeting live on the Internet.
JCP Chair Shii Kazuo noted that the JCP’s local committees decided on candidates to put up for election throughout the nation shortly after Prime Minister Abe Shinzo abruptly announced a snap general election. This shows the JCP’s true potential of responding to political changes, he said.
Shii called on party members to work hard to gain public support for the JCP’s five campaign promises: to block another consumption tax increase; to bring an end to Abenomics, the Abe government’s economic policy just serving the needs of big businesses; to revoke the Cabinet decision to enable Japan to exercise the right to collective self-defense; to thwart the plan to restart nuclear power plants; and to put a stop to the construction of a new U.S. military base in Okinawa.
The JCP chair stressed that the Abe administration’s runaway policies overall should be called into question in the general election, although PM Abe is trying to narrow the discussion of issues down to Abenomics. He said that the JCP will make its utmost efforts to press the government to give up on its plan to raise the sales tax rate to 10% in 2017. He added that the JCP is the only political party presenting a responsible economic policy aimed to improve the livelihood of the general public.
Shii underscored the importance of efforts that have led to the gaining of the public trust which the JCP has earned through participation in a variety of “single-issue” joint struggles to obtain more votes for the JCP. “To make a major advance in this election, let’s create a great wind behind us pushing us forward,” he said.
