Miyazaki Hayao becomes ‘Henoko Fund’ co-head
|
Film director Miyazaki Hayao will take up a post as co-leader of the “Henoko Fund” launched by key figures and local business persons to raise funds to support Okinawans’ resistance against the construction of a new U.S. base in Henoko in Nago City.
In addition to Miyazaki, well-known journalist Torigoe Shuntaro will also be a co-head of the recently-established fundraising body, a preparatory committee of the fund announced at a press conference in the Okinawan capital of Naha on March 8.
With these two figures, the number of co-leaders of the fund will be nine in total, including a former Kadena Town mayor and a prominent photojournalist.
A representative of the preparatory committee said, “Miyazaki is a world famous figure. His involvement in the fund will help increase the popular movement globally as well as locally opposing the base construction in Henoko. It is very significant.”
Miyazaki last year said in writing, “What East Asia needs for its peace is the non-militarization of Okinawa.”
The 1-month-old fund has already collected 141.4 million yen in contributions as of May 7.
