Walking along various routes throughout Japan, the nationwide anti-nuke peace march on August 4 arrived at the Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima City.
After their arrival, a rally took place with around 300 people, including marchers, in front of the Memorial Cenotaph.
The participants offered a minute of silence for the dead. In the rally, marchers, including Mary Popeo from the American Friends Service Committee, who is the anchor of the international youth relay march, delivered speeches.
Odagawa Yoshikazu, National Confederation of Trade Unions (Zenroren) president, gave a speech on behalf of the organizing committee of the World Conference against A and H Bombs which organizes the peace march. He said, “The three-month-long walk helped develop public opposition to the war bills which could pose the risk of another atomic bombing on Japan. Let’s work for the success of this year’s World Conference against A and H bombs and accomplishing the scrapping of the war bills.”
Nishida Shigeyoshi, who walked the Toyama-Hiroshima course, said, “The need now is to exert every effort to protect our precious Article 9 of the Constitution.”
