JCP will back DPJ candidate in Nagano to oppose LDP candidate

March 8, 2016
The Japanese Communist Party in Nagano Prefecture on March 7 announced that it will support a Democratic Party candidate in the Nagano constituency in the House of Councilors election, and that a JCP candidate for the Nagano district will switch her candidacy to the proportional representation election.

A signing ceremony on policy agreement among the JCP local committee, the DPJ local chapter, and candidate Sugio Hideya took place on the same day in Nagano City.

Karasawa Chiaki, who was originally the JCP candidate for the district, later held a press conference and said she will do her best running as a proportional-representation candidate. She stated, “I welcome Sugio as our joint candidate. I will make an all-out effort to work closely with the DPJ to achieve his victory.”

Based on the tripartite policy agreement, Sugio will work to repeal the security legislation, withdraw the Cabinet decision allowing the exercise of the right to collective self-defense, and restore constitutionalism; work to bring down the Abe government; block constitutional revision by the Abe government; and rectify the income gaps in society.

The JCP Nagano committee will keep encouraging the local DPJ to cooperate on other key issues such as opposition to the TPP and the consumption tax increase. Ayusawa Satoshi, the head of the JCP Nagano committee, said, “The policy agreement is a big step forward in the move to abolish the war laws and restore constitutionalism,” and expressed the local JCP’s determination to achieve the victory of the joint candidate in the Nagano constituency.
