Shii comments on China’s military drills in South China Sea
|
Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo on July 5 issued a statement concerning China’s military exercises in the South China Sea.
The Chinese Navy on the same day began conducting military drills in a sea area that includes the Paracel Islands in the South China Sea. The drills are scheduled to continue until July 11.
In the statement, Shii pointed out that any military exercise in the South China Sea where territorial disputes exists should be halted as it will heighten tensions in the region and violate Article five of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea that stipulates, “The Parties undertake to exercise self-restraint in the conduct of activities that would complicate or escalate disputes and affect peace and stability”.
