2009 JULY 29 - AUGUST 14 JCP demands that government break away from U.S. 'nuclear umbrella' to become genuinely nuclear-free Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo issued a statement entitled "The government must stop opposing U.S. destruction of nuclear-capable cruise missiles and break away from the U.S. nuclear umbrella to declare itself nuclear-free both in name and reality." JCP Chair Shii meets with U.N. General Assembly President D'Escoto Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo on August 4 met with the president of the U.N. General Assembly, Miguel D'Escoto, in Tokyo, and they agreed to cooperate with each other in the effort to rouse public support for the total elimination of nuclear weapons.
