Japanese Communist Party Vice Chair Yamashita Yoshiki on April 21 visited the UN World Food Programme (WFP) Japan Relations Office to submit more than 29 million yen in donations the party additionally received from throughout Japan to support Ukraine.
Yakiya Naoe, director of the UN WFP Japan Relations Office, said, "The donations collected from across the country through grassroots actions are appreciated. We will responsibly utilize the money immediately,” and handed a letter of gratitude to Yamashita.
The WFP is providing support to more than 1.8 million internally-displaced Ukrainians under a situation where supply networks were disrupted or destroyed in the Russian invasion. Yakiya said, "Taking advantage of the neutrality of humanitarian aid, we succeeded in opening a transport route after repeated negotiations with both sides. We have not yet entered Mariupol but have been delivering food to many underground shelters in eastern Ukraine."
Yamashita said, "I wholeheartedly respect the WFP for its hard effort. In order to have Russia's aggression stopped as early as possible, the JCP will also make efforts."
