Hiroshima Hibakusha and anti-nuke groups on April 11 issued statements criticizing a declaration on nuclear disarmament released by the Group of Seven foreign ministers on the same day.
The G7 ministers in Hiroshima adopted the Hiroshima Declaration on Nuclear Disarmament and Non-Proliferation which states that a world without nuclear weapons “can only be achieved if we take a determined, realistic and incremental approach.” They, however, turned their backs on the global call for immediate efforts to eliminate all nuclear weapons and for the start of negotiations on a Nuclear Weapons Convention.
The Hiroshima Prefectural Council against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs (Hiroshima Gensuikyo) said in the statement that the “realistic and incremental approach” is the same as the ineffectual step-by-step approach. The council criticized the G7 declaration for placing the abolition of nuclear weapons as an unachievable goal, sending the statement to Prime Minister Abe Shinzo and Foreign Minister Kishida Fumio.
The Hiroshima Prefectural A- and H-Bomb Sufferers’ Organization (Hiroshima Hidankyo) pointed out that the declaration makes no reference to the abolition of nuclear weapons which brought about “immense devastation and human suffering” to the people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. “Because of this,” the organization said, “We cannot say these countries ‘share the deep desire of the people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki’.”
