Japanese Communist Party member of the House of Representatives Motomura Nobuko on March 9 met with Ebihara Ryuichi of the Japan Committee for UNICEF in the Diet building and handed to Ebihara five million yen in donations that the JCP had collected for earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria.
Ebihara thanked the JCP, saying, "We will soon send the money to disaster-hit areas." He explained that the money will be used for provision of relief supplies such as safe drinking water and sanitary goods as well as for reconstruction activities tied to educational, psychological, social support for children.
Motomura appreciated UNICEF's engagement and asked him about the current situation of sufferers, especially children, in the two countries.
Ebihara said that about 2.5 million children in Turkey and three million in Syria are in need of emergency assistance, and that medical assistance, including vaccinations, is taking place as cholera infections are prevalent in the affected areas.
