The newly-formed Japan Metal, Manufacturing, Information and Telecommunication Workers' Union (JMITU) Alphabet Union branch on March 7 held a street campaign near the Google Japan office building in Tokyo’s Shibuya Ward to block the company’s job-cut plan.
The world’s most popular search engine operator Google is now conducting massive layoffs worldwide. In February, Google’s Japanese unit notified its employees via e-mail of a downsizing plan and in March began holding personal interviews with targeted workers.
Holding a banner showing Google’s corporate philosophy: “Don’t be evil!”, JMITU Alphabet Union members delivered to Google Japan workers leaflets protesting against the company’s unilateral layoff plan and calling on them to join the union-set online community.
