2011 April 27 - May 10 [NUCLEAR CRISIS]

Shimane residents call for safety checks of Shimane N-plant

April 30, 2011
Residents of Shimane’s Matsue City on April 28 made representations to Governor Mizoguchi Zenbe to demand that all reactors at the Shimane Nuclear Power Plant operated by the Chugoku Electric Power Co., Ltd. be fully inspected.

A Japanese Communist Party member of the Shimane Prefectural Assembly and nine JCP members of the Matsue City Assembly turned over the petition.

Matsue City is the only prefectural capital in Japan where a nuclear power plant is located.

The residents are also urging the governor to re-examine the existence of active faults near the plant and to cancel the planned plutonium-thermal program at reactor Unit 2 of the Shimane plant.

The residents said, “The Fukushima crisis has revealed the fallacy of the ‘safety myth’ of nuclear power generation. A serious nuclear power plant accident may occur in our prefecture as well. The prefectural government should reconsider its energy policy and tell the nuclear plant operator to cancel the plutonium-thermal program.”
