In the April 5 mayoral election in Kodaira City, Tokyo, Kobayasi Masanori, the incumbent mayor, recommended by the Japanese Communist Party as well as the Democratic and the Social Democratic parties and the Seikatsusha Network, secured his second term of office by defeating a candidate recommended by the Liberal and Komei parties.
In a by-election contest over a seat in the Kodaira City Assembly on April 5, JCP candidate Suehiro Susumu failed to be elected.
On the following day, the JCP Tokyo Kitatama Eastern District Committee issued a statement stressing that over the past four years, Mayor Kobayashi carried out residents-first policies, including free medical care for children, improvement in the financial support program for gynecological checkups, and reduction in the nursing care insurance tax.
Kobayashi achieved an overwhelming victory over a candidate recommended by the Liberal and Komei parties by gaining 70 percent of the votes.
Regarding the result of the city assembly by-election, the number of votes for the JCP increased by 1,342 from the 2007 city assembly election, and by 895 from the 2007 House of Councilors proportional representation election.
In order to establish a Kodaira City government with a resident first policy, the JCP will do its utmost to fulfill its campaign promises.
