The Okinawa City Police on April 26 arrested a 28-year-old staff sergeant assigned to the U.S. Kadena Air Base on a charge of injurious assault.
The police suspect that at around 5:15 a.m. on that day, the serviceman injured a 23-year-old male university student by repeatedly hitting him in the face in the elevator of a multitenant building in Okinawa City.
At that time, there were only the two men in the elevator. When the elevator door opened, a passerby found the student being assaulted and immediately called the police.
The building contains bars and restaurants. The police said that alcohol was detected on the suspect’s breath. The serviceman has reportedly denied the allegation of assault.
