The Japanese Communist Party members of the Osaka City Assembly on February 22 petitioned Osaka City Mayor Yoshimura Hirofumi not to allow USS Blue Ridge to enter the Osaka Port.
The flagship of the U.S. Seventh Fleet is planned to be in the port for three days from February 24.
The JCP assembly members in the petition pointed out that Blue Ridge served as a command ship in the Vietnam War and also in the Gulf War and has played a central role in the U.S. preemptive attack strategy. They said that it is inappropriate for the peaceful trade port of Osaka to receive the warship without a declared emergency.
The Osaka City Assembly in November 1994 adopted a resolution to maintain a peaceful operation of the Osaka Port which ensures that no nuclear arms enter the harbor area and that Osaka continue to be a peaceful trade port open to the world.
