Cross-party Dietmembers call on Japan's Foreign Ministry to appropriately deal with Myanmar issues
|
The cross-party parliamentarians' league supporting democratization of Myanmar made representations to Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on April 9, demanding that the Japanese government make diplomatic efforts to stop the Myanmar military's crackdowns on protesters.
Japanese Communist Party Secretariat Head Koike Akira (House of Councilors) and Inoue Satoshi (House of Councilors) participated in the representations.
The parliamentarians' league demanded that the government use all possible diplomatic resources to: end violence against Myanmar protesters; realize the release of executives of the National League for Democracy (NLD) and citizens who are unfairly in custody; and help bring full authority back to the elected democracy.
The parliamentarians' league also demanded that Japan and the world's governments: penalize military members who stripped people of their lives and possessions; suspend support or cooperation, including the Official Development Assistance (ODA), which bring benefits to the Myanmar Army; and recognize the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH) as the legitimate representative of Myanmar citizens.
Koike said, "This is not a situation where we can sit idle," adding that launching the military coup and attacking and killing protesters are "not just Myanmar's internal affairs but a world affair concerning human rights issues".
Inoue pointed out that Japan’s ODA to Myanmar amounts to 3.1 billion yen in loan assistance, 1.8 billion yen in grant aid, and 2.1 billion yen in technical cooperation. He demanded the suspension of ODA benefiting the Myanmar Army.
