JCP candidates in Okinawa elections campaign for victory together with anti-base incumbent governor

September 7 & 8, 2022

With Okinawa gubernatorial and local elections (Sep.11) approaching, "All Okinawa" forces which consist of anti-base local politicians and concerned citizens, including Okinawa-elected Japanese Communist Party Dietmember Akamine Seiken, conducted an election rally in front of the prefectural government office building on September 7.

Incumbent gubernatorial candidate Tamaki Denny expressed his determination to win his reelection in order to show the central government yet again Okinawans' firm opposition to the new U.S. base project in the Henoko district in Nago City. In addition, Tamaki called for the victory of All-Okinawa candidates in all local elections taking place on the same day as the gubernatorial election.

Tamaki's campaign office received messages in solidarity from 14 overseas organizations such as the French Peace Movement, the Bertrand Russell Peace Foundation, the International Peace Bureau, and the Australian Anti-bases Campaign Coalition.

The JCP fielded 18 candidates in 14 city, town, and village elections. JCP Akamine, JCP members of the House of Representatives Miyamoto Takeshi, Tamura Takaaki, and Motomura Nobuko, and JCP member of the House of Councilors Yamazoe Taku went to Okinawa on September 6 to deliver campaign speeches in support of JCP candidates.
