2012 March 28 - April 3 [NUCLEAR CRISIS]

Citizens file case against restart of Ikata NPP

March 29, 2012
A group of 322 citizens on March 28 filed a lawsuit with the Matsuyama District Court, demanding that the Shikoku Electric Power Company be prohibited from restarting its Ikata Nuclear Power Plant in Ehime Prefecture.

This is the 2nd round of a legal action being taken by a citizens’ group calling for the shutdown of the Ikata plant that began late last year. The total number of plaintiffs has reached 622.

In the Shikoku region, which includes Ehime prefecture, the number of cities, towns and villages in which the plaintiffs are living has increased from 36 in the last filing to 76, which represents 80 % of all the municipalities in the region.

After filing the lawsuit, secretary general of the group Wada Osamu spoke to reporters and said that the increase in the number of plaintiffs means the growth in strength of their movement.
