2012 April 4 - 10 [NUCLEAR CRISIS]

Citizens’ groups in Chiba demand apology from Tokyo governor over his nuclear plan remark

April 6, 2012
Citizens’ groups in Chiba Prefecture on April 6 submitted a petition to Tokyo Governor Ishihara Shintaro calling for the withdrawal of his suggestion regarding the feasibility of constructing a nuclear power plant in Tokyo Bay.

At a Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly budget committee meeting held on March 14, Ishihara stated, “It would be no problem whatsoever to construct a nuclear power plant in Chiba Prefecture or somewhere in Tokyo Bay.”

He then said, “It would also be a good idea to construct one on the top of Mt. Nokogiri in Chiba Prefecture.”

The petition criticized his lack of understanding regarding the danger of nuclear power plant accidents, demanding that Ishihara retract his insensitive remark and apologize to Chiba residents.

A Tokyo metropolitan government official accepted the petition and said that he would hand it to the governor.
