University students more dependent on part-time jobs to pay their living expenses

With financial support from parents decreasing, university students are getting more dependent on survival on their part-time jobs, a survey by the National Federation of University Co-operative Associations has found.
According to the survey results published on February 27, university students who live on their own received from their parents an allowance of 70,140 yen a month in 2014, down by 2,140 yen from the previous year. The ratio of the allowance to students’ total income hit a record low of 57.4% and the share of income from part-time jobs reached a record high of 20.9%.
The percentage of respondents who said they do more part-time work to make ends meet increased to 45% from 42%.
Of those students who have part-time jobs, 44.4% said that they use the earnings for living expenses.
