March 31, 2015
The majority of the public in opinion polls, recently conducted by various news media, oppose the move toward the creation of “war legislation” in the current Diet session, Akahata on March 31 reported.

The Abe administration is aiming to introduce a “war legislation” designed for Japan’s use of the collective self-defense right in the current ordinary session of the Diet.

In an opinion poll that Kyodo News conducted on March 28 and 29, 45.0% of the respondents opposed the government move to introduce legislation to facilitate Japan’s exercise of the controversial right, while 40% support the move. In an Asahi Shimbun opinion poll (March 17), 44% expressed opposition to such legislation and 52% said “No” to expansion in the range of Self-Defense Forces’ activities. An opinion poll result that NHK aired on March 9 indicated that 38% are opposed to the government move and 22% are in favor.

Results of an opinion poll that Mainichi Shimbun released on March 16 showed that those who expressed opposition to the creation of war legislation in the current Diet session reached 52%. A Nikkei Shimbun opinion poll on March 23 also revealed that 51% said “No” to the war legislation. In the same poll, even among supporters of the Komei Party, coalition partner of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, those choosing “disapproval” of the legislation exceeds those choosing “approval”.
