Government shelves policy to halt Yanba Dam construction

November 7, 2010
Land, Infrastructure, and Transport Minister Mabuchi Sumio on November 6 expressed the intention to shelve the ministry’s policy of putting a halt to the construction of the Yanba Dam which was upheld by his predecessor Maehara Seiji.

Mabuchi, who inspected the dam construction site in Gunma Prefecture on that day, said, “I won’t commit to a halt to the construction. The examination of the Yanba dam project should be free from all preconceptions.”

The minister said that the examination should be finished by the autumn of 2011 so that the result can be reflected in FY 2012 government budget draft.

The Democratic Party of Japan in the House of Representatives election in 2009 publicly promised a halt to the Yanba Dam construction as a symbol of political change from the Liberal Democratic-Komei government obsession with wasteful construction projects.
