Kami attends meeting with South Korean parliamentarians' group
|
Japanese Communist Party member of the House of Councilors Kami Tomoko, member of the Japan-South Korea Parliamentarians' Union women's committee, attended a meeting on February 10 with a South Korean national assemblymembers' group and Secretary General of the National Assembly Lee Kwang-jae in the Diet building.
They exchanged views on mutual cooperation to work for the future of Japan and South Korea.
Kami said that we should make specific efforts based on the 1998 Tokyo-Seoul Partnership Declaration in order to settle unresolved historical issues between the two countries.
Park Dae-chul who heads the South Korean group said that the Declaration made by Kim Dae-jung and Obuchi Keizo was intended to have a forward-looking spirit by overcoming the past. He, however, pointed out that the pending problems arising from the past are actually hampering the two countries from going forward, emphasizing the need to narrow the gap between the Declaration's spirit and reality.
Kami went on to the topic of women's participation in national politics. She said that the ratio of female parliamentarians to the total is low both in Japan and South Korea. Stressing the importance of improvements in women's social status for economic progress of both countries, she called for mutual cooperation in promoting women's empowerment.
