87% of private kindergarten teachers have to take work home

August 10, 2012
The National Federation of Private School Teachers and Staff Union (Shikyoren) on August 9 released a survey result on the working conditions of private preschool teachers.

The survey result showed that 88% of respondents answered that they work “more than 9 hours a day.” Around 80% of them are forced to work overtime without pay.

Not only from the union's survey but also the education ministry’s survey, it is clear that private kindergarten teachers suffer from low wages. According to the education ministry’s survey, 63% of respondents earn only 150,000-200,000 yen per month.

In addition, the union’s investigation showed that 87% of respondent teachers have to take their work home with them due to heavy workloads and 10% of them spend more than 4 hours working on their take-home work.
