2012 October 10 - 16 [NUCLEAR CRISIS]

LDP and Keidanren agree with nuclear energy promotion

October 10, 2012
Liberal Democratic Party President Abe Shinzo and Japan Business Federation (Keidanren) Chair Yonekura Hiromasa on October 9 agreed on the need to promote nuclear power generation in their talks at a hotel in Tokyo.

It is unusual for a Keidanren chair to meet with a leader of the largest opposition party before exchanging views with the new leadership of the ruling Democratic Party of Japan or ministers of the newly-reshuffled cabinet.

At the beginning of their talks, Yonekura expressed his expectation for Abe to “exercise strong leadership to overcome the current hardship.” Abe responded to him by saying, “We’d like to talk and jointly act with Japan’s economic circle in order to strengthen Japan’s economy.”

The Keidanren chair reiterated his opposition to the government policy to realize the “zero” option for nuclear power plants.

The LDP leader also said, “There would be no economic growth or social security without promoting nuclear energy. That is the line the LDP should stick to.”
