NRA invites security police officers to its regular meetings

Akahata reported that the Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) had security police officers attending its weekly meetings.

At a press conference on October 10, vice chair of the NRA’s administrative organ Morimoto Hideka admitted to this fact.

The NRA allows pre-registered people and media reporters to observe the weekly meetings.

In the press conference, pointed out by a reporter that monitoring of observers at the meeting is inappropriate, Morimoto said, “(Presence of the security police is) to assure that the meetings proceed peacefully.”

NRA Chair Tanaka Shun’ichi said that he did not know anything about the presence of security police officers at the meetings.

The NRA on October 3 published a draft of revised guidelines on countermeasures against nuclear disasters.

In the draft, the NRA plans to extend emergency planning zones (EPZ), in which people are required to evacuate to when a nuclear accident occurs, from the current 8-10km radius of a nuclear power plant to a 30km radius. The newly designated EPZ will include 135 municipalities, 90 more than the current EPZ.
