JCP Chair Shii holds talks with Vietnamese President Triet

November 27, 2007
Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo on November 26 held talks with Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet in Tokyo. Triet is the first Vietnamese head of state to make a state visit to Japan.

The two leaders had a heart-to-heart discussion and shared the satisfaction that the JCP and the Communist Party of Vietnam are developing new forms of exchanges to meet contemporary needs while confirming the 41 years of solidarity between the two parties since the Vietnamese people’s war of national salvation against the U.S. war of aggression.

Welcoming President Triet to Japan, Shii said that during his visit to Vietnam last January, he was impressed by the remarkable achievement of the Doi Moi policy in reducing the poverty rate and by the university students who showed great hope for the future as they listened to his lecture at Hanoi University.

Noting that the Vietnamese foreign policy of multilateralism and diversification has made significant progress and increased Vietnam’s importance in international politics, Shii said, “I wish you even greater successes in Vietnam.”

Thanking Shii for his appreciation of Vietnam’s efforts, Triet explained that the Doi Moi policy is making progress and that the CPV is making efforts by carefully listening to the general public and trying to bring about as much benefits as possible to the public. “We are determined to develop our country in a direction toward achieving socialism,” he added.

Expressing hope to further develop the present good relationship between the JCP and the CPV, Shii said that there are two key ways to develop their bilateral relations. One is to promote bilateral cooperation for contributing to peace in Asia and the rest of the world. The other is to continue theoretical exchanges between the two parties as a long-term project. Shii said that he is happy that the JCP and the CPV held their first theoretical discussion earlier this month in Tokyo.

Recalling the struggle during the years of the Vietnamese war of national salvation against the U.S. war of aggression, Triet said, “The JCP maintained its representative and the Akahata bureau in Hanoi even during the U.S. bombing of the North” and welcomed the recent new development of relations between the two parties, and said, “I wish you further progress in the cause of the Japanese Communist Party. “

Referring to his visit to the Cu Chi Tunnels, Shii said that he was impressed by the sturdiness, organization, and flexibility that the Vietnamese people displayed during their war of national salvation against the U.S. war of aggression. He said that these historical features have relevance to the present-day Vietnamese people’s efforts to carry out the Doi Moi policy, and wished Vietnam greater success in their cause.

The talks were also attended from the JCP side by Ichida Tadayoshi, Secretariat head; Ogata Yasuo, JCP Vice chair; Koike Akira, JCP Policy Commission chair; Kokuta Keiji, JCP Diet Policy Commission chair; Hiroi Nobuko, JCP Women Commission chair; and Morihara Kimitoshi, JCP International Bureau deputy director; and from the Vietnamese side by Nguyen Quoc Cuong, Viet Nam Farmers’ Association (VNFA) president; Vu Hoang Ha, Binh Dinh Province People’s Council chair; Nguyen Thi Nurong, Cao Bang Province Party Committee chair; Nguyen Phu Binh, Deputy Foreign Minister; Do Xuan Dong, Assistant to State President; and Chu Tuan Cap, Ambassador to Japan.
