Shii presses PM Ishiba to recognize forced displacement of Palestinians in Gaza as breach of international law

February 18, 2025
Japanese Communist Party Central Committee Chair Shii Kazuo pressed Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru to recognize that there should not be a forced displacement of Palestinians from Gaza.

At a meeting of the House of Representatives Budget Committee on February 17, Shii took up the statements U.S. President Donald Trump recently made that the U.S. would “take a long-term ownership position” over the Gaza Strip and redevelop the territory into a beach resort after forcibly relocating Palestinians living there.

The UN Charter strictly prohibits the acquisition of territory by force. The Geneva Conventions also prohibit mass forcible transfers from an occupied territory to the territory of the occupying power or to that of any other country, regardless of their motive.

Shii said, “President Trump’s pronouncements obviously violate the UN Charter and international law,” and asked PM Ishiba if he is aware of this.

Ishiba responded, “Our country will consider each country’s actions always in the light of international law.”

Shii said, “So, your answer is ‘I won’t comment’ on whether or not Trump’s suggestion violates international law.”

He went on to say, “Criticism is arising against Trump’s remarks from the international community, including from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Palestine, Jordan, Germany, France, Canada, Brazil, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, and ASEAN,” and again asked PM Ishiba, “Are you aware that forcing Palestinian inhabitants out of Gaza is absolutely illegal and thus unacceptable?”

Ishiba replied, “I’m not aware of the fact that the United States has decided on such a policy.”

Shii criticized Ishiba by saying, “You are keeping your mouth shut about things that might offend President Trump, no matter how outrageous it is. I must say that you are taking a servile attitude as usual.”
